Management of a Data Center: Our case study

Welcome again!!! In today’s posts we’ll continue talking about the management of a data center but applied to our case study. If you missed our last post you can review it here. As always, as we will focus on the enterprise given to us to work: Dell.

Among all the products, resources and options that we have found researching and evaluating what Dell can offers us, we we'll focus on the one that cover the needs of our case study: a ultimate generation data center for a bank corporation.

-Dell Foglight Series: Dell Foglight Application is a series of products intended to monitor and manage all the network equipment. Depending on our needs (servers, database, virtual machines...), we can find specific products:

All the products above are designed to monitor, analyze and report all the traffic in our network to make our management easier and control all the events and traffic flow in our data center.

-SonicWall Analyzer: Is a software that runs on SonicWall devices that gives us a web-based network traffic analysis and reporting tool.

This very complete toolbox allow us to evaluate data, backup and recovery, secure remote access appliances, traffic analytics, event reports...

We have to highlight our need to have a very monitored and secured remote channel access (for the client that want to manage their accounts and the workers that may work remotely.
Also the traffic analytics and events report section have the capability to create a Syslog event record to have an historical log database in case of an intrusion, equipment failure or malfunctioning of a certain server or network equipment.

SonicWall devices also allows us to control our private DNS servers of our enterprise LAN, create multiple copies of them, managing from a single point, enter or delete dns entries... All going through our firewall and being analyzed for better security.

On the SonicWall devices range, the ones that we must take in consideration for our case study are:
-SuperMassive E10000 series (deep security next-gen scalable firewall capable to work at multiple gigabit speed)
-SMA 1000 series (specific equipment designed to control remote access)
-Email security specific designed products

All these SonicWall products (including the SonicWall Analyzer) can be controlled from a single console of management via the Dell Global Management System with the certain that we are managing all the systems with security and without creating vulnerabilities on our network.

Some systems explained today are redundant and you may want to dispense of one of them (you probably can resolve all the needs with a single SonicWall device, without the rest of them and neither the Foglight services) but we have to consider all the solutions. So we you can have a wider view of the multiple solutions.

That has been all for today’s post, as always stay tuned to the new posts to learn more and have a nice week!!!
