Services implementation

Hi guys,

in today’s post we are going to talk about how to implement the services we need for the data center we are designing. We must remember that we are designing a data center for a financial company, and the equipment that we must use is from IBM for the servers part, Arista Networks for the Local Area Network, and Paloalto for security aspects.

First of all, it's important to say that we will base our solution on virtualization. It's the most important change that affected data centers in the last years, and it brings a lot of advantages, most of which we are going to explain in the following paragraphs.

So let's start with the part of the servers, where we are going to use equipment of IBM. As we said before, we will implement virtualization, in this case with the IBM PowerVM. This method brings a lot of advantages to our network, some of which are the following:

  • Be able to offer cheaper services due to the virtualization of some services in a unique device
  • Offers cloud services faster thanks to the automatic implementation of virtual machines and storage
  • Optimizes the usage of resources and storage
  • Be able to scale the network without affecting the performance
  • Delete inactivity time between servers thanks to live mobility

To specify a little bit more about the servers part, we can say that we are going to use devices from the family Power Systems (IBM), which work so well with the PowerVM software. The particularization of the models of these devices will be chosen later.

So to brief this part, we can say that Power Systems working with PowerVM offers the advantages of virtualization without limits, providing security, flexibility, scalability, reliability, availability and an excellent performance.

For the LAN aspects, we are going to use equipment from Arista Networks. Virtualization of this part, will help to reduce the physical connection between devices (delivering an optical level of flexibility and mobility) due to compute nodes can now be placed dynamically anywhere in the datacenter. In this case, we will use the Virtual eXtensible Local Area Network (VXLAN) solution, from Arista Networks.

About the security, we are going to use equipment from Paloalto. In this case we are going to use some firewalls of the family Virtualized Next-Generated Firewall. The fact of using "virtualized" firewalls adds an extra of security due to it allows to protect each service separately. In this case, we are going to use some firewalls, to have all the network secure. We will have service security, perimetral protection, cloud protection, segmentation gateway, IPSec VPN termination point... and all the necessary to secure our infrastructure, due to it's a financial company, and it's a very important issue to worry about.
