The SDN evolution

Software Defined Networking (SDN)

Software-defined networking (SDN) is an alternative to the traditional poor scalable architectures that require complex configurations. As it is a complex concept, we will use this post to try to clearly define the term and the advantages of its implementation.

SDN

For today applications and traffic, the traditional architectures are becoming deprecated because of the complexity of its implementation and configuration, the amount of protocols involved and the tedious management process. The SDN provides an adaptive design for today and future systems that provides a dynamic use of the network sources to meet the traffic and user requirements, on top of that it can perform at the same level of the actual systems except being more cost-efficient, it is also the best solution for cloud services because it can adapt to a wide variety of application, network and computational requirements.

With the increased number of users and high demand of traffic, the connections between the servers represent a huge cpu and bandwidth usage.

The large number of protocols, rules, lists to be included in a system makes it difficult to implement, to make a change in the structure or even restructure completely the system.

For these previous reasons, SDN solution is needed, it provides advantages like share the hardware usage between different applications which traduces in invest less money in another hardware device that performs the same functionality. This is a great advantage when adapting the use of the server according to the requirements of the different applications, because at a time it may require a large computational volume, which is reserved dynamically by the system and when it is not needed, it is provided to an another application. This also provides flexibility and fast response to the client requirements.

Finally, due to its automation, it is not necessary the intervention to solve an error in the system, the system itself is responsible for solving it, so it becomes an easily manageable system.

We hope that we have clarified the concept of SDN, See you in future posts!
