The adoption of Cloud Computing

Posteado por

Cloud computing is a concept that englobes a variety of computing concepts that involve a large number of computers connected through a real time communication network. So, cloud computing is the same as distributed computing over a network, and is the ability to run a program or application on many connected computers at the same time. It works with network–‐based services which are provided by real server hardware and are served up by virtual hardware, simulated by software running on one or more real machines.

We can differentiate five different stages in the Adoption Cycle S‐Curve

1. Innovators →

individual level: At the time of taking a new innovation, pioneers or innovators are the first group that adopt it by taking risks. Normally are the highest social class because they have funding to invest.

company level: they take that risk because they are enthusiastic and care about technology.

 2. Early Adopters →

individual level: Is the second group in innovation adoption. They have a high financial liquidity, social status and advanced education. On the other hand, are more discrete than innovators at the time of adopting new options.

company level: they are looking for new technologies to solve a problem, they care about the “product” and are kind of visionaries, they realize what is going to be new, the benefit of that innovation.

3. Early Majority →

individual level: In this stage, individuals spend more time when adopting new technology. They have above average social status and contact with the second group; early adopters and rarely occupy leadership positions.

company level: there is a huge difference between early adopters and early majority, here they don’t look for data, they want to find a solution, with supplementary services, they care for the “whole product”.

4. Late Majority →

individual level : This group is characterised by owning a high level of skepticism and they adopt the new technology after the majority of society has adopted. They have below average social status, little liquidity and low opinion leadership.

company level: in the late majority the companies that are introducing to the market are the ones that care about the whole vision of the company, and refuse to changes.

5. Laggards →

Last group in adopting innovation. They don’t have opinion leadership and have aversion to change–‐agents. They are focused on traditions and are the lowest social status and low financial liquidity, these are the ones that are ging to adapt the last, and in some cases they do not do that.

The cloud applications cost far less and can be used from anywhere if you need anything installed on your computer, plus quite secure platforms are used. Since nowadays, all the applications have been difficult and expensive. It was necessary to instal a hardware and a software plus a group of suers experts in that field so that everything would work correctly (install, configure, test, run, update…).

Some years ago it was impossible or very expensive that a small or medium company could afford the luxury to install a complex application, while large and multinational companies were the ones that were the ones that could do. Thanks to cloud computing those problems have been reduced. Is not just the possibility you have everything you need anytime anywhere, its the fact that, every single firm pays just what they need in order to avoid further expenses.

We are not taling about huge applications as ones for accountability, or CMS… we are also talking about simple applications that nowadays we can0t live without those such as email.

Cloud applications are less expensive and you can use it everywhere without the necessity of having anything installed in your computer Before cloud computing, all the applications, programs, and information need to be inside the computer or you only had the option to save it in a hard drive, CD, pen drive.

As we have mentioned before it was more expensive and small and medium businesses it was not efficient to install some programs due to its cost, so cloud computing has made a big change, reducing time and cost, work and use it everytime everywhere, competitiveness, environmentally friendly, also as increase collaboration and it gives more flexibility. This service is also characterised by being very easy to maintain, once you start to using it, you pay for forgetting to maintain the platform. As we realize at first companies where the ones that use it, but nowadays people is using it more and more, as dropbox. so we can affirm also that IT begins and ends with increased efficiency and cost savings.

So, we can actually focus the “Cloud Computing” technology the “Early Majority” stage. At the beginning was used by companies with the purpose of storage information in a safe place (Early Adopters), but now is being more and more used in a social environment with examples like Instagram, DropBox, Pinterest… so, the purpose is changing and more and more people are using it.
