Facebook, Unstoppable?

After the last post about Diaspora, I was reading Techcrunch and I found an interesting post about the force of Facebook.

As Facebook says,

  • Facebook has over 500 million users
  • 50% of our active users log on to Facebook in any given day
  • Average user has 130 friends
  • People spend over 700 billion minutes per month on Facebook
  • There are more than 200 million active users currently accessing Facebook through their mobile devices.

This statistics show the power of Facebook, and according to the article, "It isn’t just a site any more: like Amazon or Google, Facebook has become a utility". It is right, years ago we started to depend on our mobile phones, no one could imagine their live without a mobile phone, now we are starting to "depend on" Facebook, maybe not addicted, but it is starting to be weird to meet someone without an account with Facebook.

The article also talked about the poor quality of innovation that Facebook has. But we can take this as a negative review, but is also scary because if Facebook is where it is, without innovation, a powerful giant with no limits known by now.

I thought it was interesting to talk about it after a post about a new social network that it is supposed to be a new alternative to Facebook. Can there be anything capable to be an alternative to Facebook? We have seen crazy things in the technology world, so this may be a new one, it will be interesting to see.
