La Salle-URL participates in the 1st Week No Noise (SSS)

From April 24 to 30 will be held in Catalonia the 1st Week Without Noise (SSS), an initiative of the organizing group of Congress ACUSTI.CAT, with the coordination of the Department of Territory and Sustainability of the Generalitat of Catalonia - Service for the prevention and Control of Acoustic and Light Pollution. During this week there will be a series of activities related to the dissemination and awareness of the problems of noise pollution, as well as its control and the management tools to be able to reduce it. These activities will be carried out throughout Catalonia, with the collaboration of all the agents involved: administrations, citizenship, schools, universities or related companies. La Salle-URL collaborates this week with three workshops aimed at high school and university students and will take place in the campus acoustics laboratory, facilities that include an anechoic chamber, a reverberant chamber and a recording studio. The first activity is an acoustic workshop where high school students from La Salle Bonanova will participate in order to know the basic principles of acoustics: what are the decibels, what frequencies we feel or how the sound is generated. Wednesday, April 26, there will be two workshops. The first, at 16h, "How many decibels does the silence?", Where participants will try to find out what is the lowest sound level that can be detected inside the anechoic chamber, a space with much silence where all the sound Is absorbed by its walls. And at 5:00 p.m., it will be analyzed whether "A loudspeaker can make as much noise as an airplane?" An airplane generates about 120 decibels, but how many decibels can be generated with a loudspeaker? In the workshop, an attempt will be made to answer this question by generating a noise speaker inside the reverberant chamber and thus measuring the maximum sound levels. The dates chosen to commemorate the Week coincide with the International Noise Awareness Day (INAD), April 26, 2017, which this year will reach its 22nd edition, an initiative promoted by the Center for Hearing And Communication, a non-governmental organization in the United States that aims to help people with deafness. The SSS also intends to give continuity to the Acoustic Congress of Catalonia, ACUSTI.CAT, which took place in its 1st edition on 28 and 29 April 2016, on a biennial basis.
