Data Center & Quality of Service

What's up GG's? I hope everything is fine for you today and you have a good quality of life, because today we will talk about ... Quality of Service for Data Center, aka QoS for DC!

To analyze the QoS of a network, you have to know different standard, for exemple the source and the destination of the message, the packet you're trying to send, the protocol used (UDP, TCP, ICMP, ...), the port used, the routing configuration, the bandwitch, the ping, ...

All of these criterions are important to analyze if the network has a good or not QoS.

The Uptime Institute, an "unbiased advisory organization focused on improving the performance, efficiency, and reliability of business critical infrastructure" aka Wikipedia, defined an international certification that divides Data Center into 4 categories names "Tier".

The Tier I is an infrastructure without redundancy, only one power supply and air conditionner without redundancy.

The Tier II has redundant unit of electricity and cold production but not redundancy for the distribution.

The Tier III can maintain all his components without the interruption of his services.

The Tier IV can tolerate breakdown. No breakdown can stop the IT service, and there is no Single Point Of Failure.

The Uptime Institute is the only organization that is allowed to delivered one of these certification. The "Tier certification" is an evidence of Quality of Service for clients and others companies.

The cons of this kind of certification is, of course, the price of it. It is around 100k euros per Data Center, which is a bit expensive.

It's up to you to decide if it's worth or not to invest in this kind of certification for you Data Center. Keep in mind that is you have an official good Quality of Service, even if it is expensive, you will probably be rewarded for that with new clients, again and again. It is the price you have to pay to do so.

That's it for today GG's, don't forget to stay tuned for more information, and take care of yourself!
