Security of a DataCenter

What’s up GG’s? Today we will FINALLY talk about… Security! I’m glad to talk you about this aspect of Data Center, because it is very important for me to have a huge security for a Data Center, especially in our case because we are talking about a DC for a bank.

If we have a bank, we have money, and money transfers, data transfers, … we have confidential information in our database and we have to secure this information as much as possible.

When I say “we have to secure”, I mean in a virtual and physical way; at a software level and a hardware level.

First of all, what kind of security could we have at a software level?

Well, it exists two types of hardware, which are doing security at a software level, named IDS and IPS.

IDS means Intrusion Detection System. It is a system that will detect any intrusion or suspicious behavior and warn you against it. But this system won’t do anything to go against the suspect behavior.

IPS means Intrusion Prevention System. Where IDS will just warn you, IPS will act against the threat! It will warn you that there is a suspicious behavior and will act to defend your system against this treat. Of course it is more expensive than an IDS, that’s why you have to choose between the two.

You can choose an IDS when you want to have only a detector and to let your employees doing the defense (if they’re up when there is an intrusion), or you can choose to pay more and to have a kind of “automatic protection against threats”. It is all your choice! Obviously, add a Firewall will be even more great for your security.

What about hardware level? Well it is very simple in fact. The equipment is expensive and has to be protected physically. You have to engage security guards to protect the equipment and overall the datacenter. You will need security cameras too to monitor everything in the datacenter. Each employee should have an ID card that allow him to go to specific area with different level requirement access for each area. Thanks to that, you will be sure that no one will go to an area he is not supposed to go.

For the hall of the datacenter, of course we should have a guard who will allow access to a corridor where only one person can pass at the same time. This same guard will allow access or not to the domain of the datacenter (from the exterior) to people and/or cars thanks to their ID card shown or the security camera.

Of course there are multiple way to secure a Data Center, but I think I give you some useful ones!

Stay tuned to have more information GG’s, and take care of yourself!
