Reflections on the human in the age of AI

The dizzying advance of technology and the unstoppable development of Artificial Intelligence have marked a crucial milestone in the history of mankind. In a world increasingly permeated by the presence of AI, there is a pressing need to reflect on the impact of these innovations on our human condition.   

This debate took place on Thursday, March 21, 2024, in the Aula Magna of La Salle-URL within the cycle "Afternoons of Thought", led by the Postgraduate area of the Faculty of Philosophy of La Salle-URL.

Among the participants in the session were Dr. Guiomar Corral, current Dean of the La Salle-URL School of Architecture and recipient of the GrausTIC 2023 award; Isabel Bellot, Director of Digital Transformation at the consulting firm Grant Thornton and Coordinator of the Masters in Technological Management and Digital Transformation at La Salle-URL; and Dr. Ricardo Mejía, professor and researcher at the Faculty of Philosophy-La Salle-URL, recognized as a member of the International Society for Science and Religion at the University of Cambridge.   

The session was introduced and moderated by Dr. Joan Cabó, academic director of Philosophy Graduate Studies at La Salle-URL.  

During the discussion, the speakers reflected on the real impact of AI in various fields, from business to social, highlighting the need for philosophy and business and technology ethics committees in guiding these advances. The active participation of the attendees enriched the dialogue, sharing reflections and raising questions that deepened the ethical and social implications of AI.  

Technology and human transformation  

The fact that renowned speakers from various fields participated in the event gave the conversation and reflections an outstanding interdisciplinary character, which is necessary today to address the problems of new technological developments and advances in Artificial Intelligence.  

The speakers agreed that AI is transforming the way we interact with the world, with others and with ourselves. Technology, more than a tool, has become an agent that redefines our reality.  

In this sense, the importance of adopting a critical perspective that questions the purposes and ethical and social implications of technology in contemporary society was emphasized. This critical approach is where philosophy plays a fundamental role, continuing its inquiry into the nature of the human being, moral responsibility and the ultimate ends of existence.  

Philosophy, a crucial role in the technological age  

While AI offers unimaginable advances in areas such as medicine, it also presents challenges for humanity. The speakers emphasized the need for a critical view that examines the purposes of technology, its ethical principles and its social consequences. 

In this context, philosophy plays a fundamental role in questioning the nature of the human being, moral responsibility and final causes. The roundtable evidenced the need for an interdisciplinary dialogue to address the complexities of the AI era.  

Some of these reflections addressed during the event are those that will be deepened in the Master in Philosophy and Contemporary Debates on Arts and Technology of La Salle-URL, an educational experience that will open new horizons of reflection in a unique university campus, addressing the complex issues of our time with other fields of knowledge, such as science and technology, arts, society, politics, economics or business.
