Bluefield Research: BRICS Industrial Water Use exceeds $15 billion in 2019
One of La Salle Technova’s startups, Bluefield Research, has recently completed a high value assessment of industrial water demand: Sizing Industrial Water Markets: The BRICS and Select Emerging Markets, 2019 – 2023.
Industrial water withdrawals for manufacturing, power and mining in non- OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) countries exceeded 306 billion gallons per day in 2018, of which 53% was made up by China, India, Brazil, Russia and South Africa, the so-called BRICS.
China represents 37% of non-OECD withdrawals, and exhibits some of the highest industrial water withdrawals of any country, second only to the United States, which reached 152 BGD in 2015. Bluefield’s report analyzes water withdrawals for key industries, geographic hotspots, and the outlook for the next five years and includes country profiles of China, India, Russia, Brazil, South Africa.
Industrial withdrawals in non-OECD countries are expected to increase by 9%, or 27 billion gallons per day, by 2023. The market for water management spend – intake treatment, discharge treatment, reuse – exceeded US$15.4 billion in 2019. Analysis of 73 countries further highlights the extreme variation in spending across mining, manufacturing and power.
