SPADATAS at TEEM 2023: Paving the Way for Enhanced Data Security in Schools

Daniel Amo-Filva, the Project Coordinator for SPADATAS at Ramon Llull University, presented results of our research at the Technological Ecosystems for Enhancing Multiculturality (TEEM 2023) conference held at the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança in Portugal from October 25 to 27, 2023.

The research, titled “Assessing and Promoting Data Fragility in Schools: Open Questionnaires for Auto-evaluation in Educational Roles,” is part of the Erasmus+ initiative and addresses the imperative of enhancing data protection for students in academic data management.

The primary objective of the SPADATAS project is the development of tools for the auto-assessment of data protection knowledge and skills. Specifically designed questionnaires target educational roles such as teachers, principals, IT admins, and data privacy officers, aiming to assess data fragility and enhance data privacy.

Aligned with the principles of DigCompEdu, the innovative tool serves to raise awareness about data protection processes, promote the responsible use of digital competence, and underscore the necessity of acquiring digital skills. Through participant perception evaluation, the tool assists stakeholders in analyzing data literacy proficiency, mapping data academic management processes, identifying flaws and gaps in data treatment, and determining the need for digital skills and competencies.

Educational institutions can leverage this tool to assess digital skills, enhance data literacy, and fortify privacy and security measures for students’ data. The ultimate goal of the project is to instigate policy updates for improved data treatment in schools.

The paper will be published in the Springer Book Series “Lecture Notes in Educational Technology”.
