Animation Industry | Challenges and Opportunities
Every year the animation sector experiences a series of changes that affect all professionals in the industry. The rise of technologies such as artificial intelligence, the massive use of 3D animation instead of traditional 2D, and the increasing demand for content for streaming platforms, constantly transform the sector.
To better understand this scenario and its implications, we spoke with Sergio Vizcaino, professor and mentor of the Degree in Animation and VFX at La Salle Campus Barcelona.
With a long career in the sector, Vizcaino shares his vision on the challenges facing the industry, the opportunities for future professionals, and how technological innovation, along with practical and updated training, shape the path for new talents.

Are we facing a period of transformation? Animation in the 21st century
The animation industry is in a phase of change, both nationally and internationally. Sergio, offers us a new perspective of the panorama, emphasizing the moment of transformation we are living, which, although it seems complex, is full of opportunities.
"There are already signs of changes in the policies of animation companies seeking new paths, which allows us to sense where the sector could be heading”. Sergio Vizcaino
Despite the uncertainty, Vizcaino believes that change will bring opportunities for those who know how to adapt. The growing demand for content for streaming platforms such as Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon Prime generates a new investment in animated content never seen before, creating new job and production opportunities.
In addition, the animation industry is going global, allowing studios and professionals to collaborate and work on projects worldwide.
“In times of stability it is difficult to enter the industry, but when everything is in transformation, new opportunities arise, even if they are not always easy to identify". Sergio Vizcaino
Another aspect Vizcaino highlights is the importance of attitude in new talent. Although technical skills are important, it is the willingness to learn continuously, the ability to innovate and the attitude towards teamwork that is most valued by production companies and animation studios.
“In the end, attitude outweighs any technical aptitude. A good attitude is what really makes the difference". Sergio Vizcaino
New technologies - opportunity and challenge
As for emerging technologies, they have always been part of animation's DNA. From the leap from 2D to 3D, to the current irruption of artificial intelligence, each advance has generated some mistrust, but has also brought new ways of filmmaking.
“Artificial intelligence is a powerful tool, but it must be regulated. With responsible use, it can be very beneficial to the industry, although artisanal filmmaking will continue to be valued". Sergio Vizcaino
In this way, he stresses the need for a balance between technological innovation and traditional techniques.
Grooming future professionals
“It is essential that students experience as close to professional reality as possible. In addition, our professors are active, which keeps us up to date with the latest trends and technologies". Sergio Vizcaino
From La Salle Campus Barcelona, the Degree in Animation and VFX is constantly adapting to changes in the sector. “Learning by doing” is the philosophy of the campus, with real projects such as short films or teasers that students develop and present at different film festivals and events promoted by the campus.
"We encourage direct contact with companies through networking, where the latest trends and technologies are discussed, ensuring that our students are always up to date with the latest developments in the sector”. Sergio Vizcaino
In-house production company: an innovative bet
One of the most ambitious projects they are developing is the creation of an in-house production company, where students have the possibility of continuing their projects once they finish their studies.
“We don't want students' ideas to stay in the classroom. We support them to reach streaming platforms or even the big screen". Sergio Vizcaino
This initiative not only benefits the students, but also gives visibility to the work done on campus, helping to strengthen its reputation in the industry.
"We firmly believe that the films and series that students create have great potential and an excellent professional outlet. That's why we strive to provide them with the support they need to turn those projects into reality”. Sergio Vizcaino
Bright future
The success of the projects and short films produced from La Salle Campus Barcelona has been widely recognized, with awards at festivals and praise from industry professionals.
We are very proud of the level achieved by our students, and every year we seek to improve even more”. Sergio Vizcaino
Although animation is going through uncertain times, the foundations being laid by future professionals in the sector promise a future full of possibilities.
With a decade of experience, the commitment continues to be to grow and perfect the work, with an eye on the next ten years, aware that there is always room to continue raising standards.
Although the career is demanding and challenging, at the end of each promotion we can see the results of that effort, in a tangible and verifiable way. We are very pleased to be able to share these achievements with the world”. Sergio Vizcaino
